An employee enters a workplace with a pre employment status which has been governed by factors such as; diet, genes, environment, psycho social, socio-economic and genes for which the employer has absolutely no control. The worker then enters the workplace and during their working day are then exposed to a range of hazard and if not identified and adequately controlled by the employer could exacerbate any of the pre employment health status resulting in a worker health outcome; latent disease, clinical disease, death, and health.

A workplace is defined as being a place where someone works and can be as obscure as someone working in a well, manholean office worker, a shop a bank clerk or kitchen. During their time at work they are exposed to a range of hazards, some obvious to the employer and worker and others not.

Every workplace has the potential to present with underlying problems known as hazards which are not just the hardware provided for the task. As an employer you need to recognize what they are and the risk of harm they present to the employee. The assessment should also incorporate a task based approach to devising the assessments. This is an internationally recognized way of managing risks if the findings from the assessment are implemented and effectively managed and involve the workforce by capturing the knowledge of those who do the work. This will result in significant improvements in safety standards, minimize losses and result in a committed workforce.
